ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: which paid subscription should you choose?
Compare October 2026 subscription prices and working styles, then use a simple task trial to choose an AI for writing, research, spreadsheets, or coding.
On this page
If you want to pay for one AI assistant, start with the task that took the most time last week. Perhaps you rewrote a report, searched across too many tabs, or spent an afternoon fixing a bug. That recurring task gives you a useful way to choose.
You can begin with the free access available to you, compare the same material, and then check the limits of the paid plan. This guide combines official information checked on October 5, 2026, with our editorial selection advice. It does not report a head-to-head performance test.
Compare prices on the same basis
These are monthly prices displayed in US dollars on the official pages, without annual discounts or introductory offers. Local prices, tax, and purchases through mobile app stores may differ. Check the final payment screen in your country.
| Service | Individual plan to compare | Monthly price | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Plus | US$20 | Model availability and your Codex allowance |
| Claude | Pro | US$20 | Claude Code access and usage limits |
| Gemini | Google AI Pro | US$19.99 | Google app integration and overlap with storage you already buy |
Prices come from the official ChatGPT, Claude, and Google One pages. Similar subscription prices do not mean identical working capacity.
An app subscription and API usage are separate purchases. An API lets another program call an AI model. Connecting an API key to an automation tool may create a separate bill even if you already subscribe to the chat app. OpenAI also warns against using API token prices to estimate the tasks included in a subscription. Pick a starting point from your actual work
| Your recurring task | First candidate to try | What to observe |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed office work with occasional coding | ChatGPT | Can you finish without moving the task elsewhere? |
| Revising long documents while also coding | Claude | Does it preserve context and follow edits accurately? |
| Working mainly inside Gmail and Docs | Gemini | Does it reduce copying and switching between apps? |
This is a suggested trial order. Your documents, account access, and preferences can change the result. Claude Pro includes Claude Code; Google AI Pro includes AI features inside Google apps. Their plan pages explain the applicable access conditions.
Recent releases make it sensible to revisit an old comparison. Anthropic introduced Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, and Google published its September update roundup on October 2. An announcement does not automatically mean that a model is available in your consumer account: that roundup describes Gemini 4 Argon as initially limited to trusted cyber defenders.
Try the same three tasks in 30 minutes
Remove sensitive information from your sample material. If a task is unavailable on a free plan, mark it as requiring a plan check instead of treating it as a failed answer.
- Writing: simplify a page you wrote while retaining its facts and names.
- Research: find three recent developments and separate the publication date, event date, and original source.
- Spreadsheets: calculate totals and identify missing values in a small table, showing the calculation.
Here is an example request you can reuse:
Turn the material below into a report draft for my manager.
Put the conclusion first and give no more than three supporting points.
Do not invent numbers. Mark missing information as 'needs checking'.
Finish with the items I should verify in the original material.
Record your editing time, not just the assistant’s response time. An answer delivered in one minute that needs fifteen minutes of correction can be less useful than one that takes three minutes and needs two minutes of editing. For research, open the links and check whether they support the claims and dates.
Make the purchase around one finished task
Before subscribing, check the feature you need, what happens at the usage limit, and whether the account is appropriate for your work documents. An employer’s data policy may determine which service or plan you can use.
After a week, count the useful tasks you completed. Keep the subscription that helps with your most frequent work. You can reassess when your needs change.
Next, compare assistants that keep working between conversations: ChatGPT dots and Meta Muse.
