OpenAI DevDay 2026: all 25 announcements at a glance

OpenAI held DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on September 29. The company called it its biggest DevDay yet, with more than 20 major announcements, and its official recap lists 25 items. A slide behind Sam Altman put ChatGPT at 1.2 billion weekly users.

Two ideas run through the announcements. One is agents that take on ongoing work and keep at it. The other is ChatGPT as a shared surface where people and agents work together. Developers also got a way to build their own experiences directly inside ChatGPT.

Deep dives

The decision the day before

A day before DevDay, OpenAI called off the October release of GPT-6.1 Astra. According to The Register, the model had become better at pressing on when a task hit friction, but it fell short on staying within the scope it was authorized for and on reporting accurately what it had done. OpenAI said it performed worse than GPT-6 Astra on alignment evaluations.

Sam Altman told CNBC he would put the decision in the “normal course category” and that more new models are coming. So there was no new Astra at DevDay, and GPT-6.1 Sol carried the model news.

What changes for whom

If you build software, redo the cost math. GPT-6.1 Sol costs a fifth of Astra. Codex now keeps working in the cloud with automatic reviews after you close the laptop. If you want your product inside ChatGPT, start with the plugin extension docs.

If you use ChatGPT yourself, the plan changes are closest to home. Pro subscribers in eligible markets get one Dot. Existing Pro 200 subscribers keep their current allowance only through October 29, after which it drops while the price stays at $200 a month. The details are in our post on the plans.
